On Monday, April 11, an attempted jailbreak at the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre in Rivers state resulted in the death of one inmate and the injury of numerous others.
Juliet Ofoni, the Correctional Centre’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), confirmed the incident, saying it took place at the old Port Harcourt Township Correctional Centre in the Port Harcourt City Local Council of Rivers State.
She added that the trouble began early yesterday morning when one inmate died as a result of a fight with another inmate.
Friends of the murdered inmates who were upset held a demonstration and planned a retaliation attack, according to her, when authorities intervened and used teargas to calm the scene.
Ofoni, however, said some inmates had seized the opportunity of the unrest to attempt jailbreak by scaling the prison fence, but were shot at from outside the prison yard.
She stated that some of the inmates sustained bullet wounds, but no life was lost in the incident.
