According to Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), key electoral materials will no longer be routed through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
He further states that, beginning with the governorship election in Ekiti State, INEC will no longer store critical materials at the Central Bank.
The goal of this action, he says, is to ensure that the electoral materials for the 2018 elections are not compromised.
This was revealed by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission while responding to questions in an ongoing election discussion in Abuja.
Several individuals and groups have raised serious concern about the sanctity of election materials kept with the Central Bank, after stories about the CBN governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, indicating an interest in contesting for the country’s presidential seat hit the airwaves in recent months.
On the Central Bank’s Governor’s political partisanship, sensitive electoral materials for the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Ekiti State will not be kept in the Central Bank office. The Independent National Electoral Commission will do everything to preserve the integrity of our elections. – Prof Mahmood Yakubu
