Peter Obi, the presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, has left the main opposition party.
Mr. Obi’s defection occurred on the eve of hotly contested presidential primaries, as the lawmaker expressed worries about being humiliated at the Abuja convention.
Mr. Peter Obi confirmed his departure to Peoples Gazette on Wednesday evening, stating he learned of a gang plotting against him.
He did not reveal his next platform right away.
The development is expected to draw even more attention to the PDP primaries, which are set to take place this weekend in Abuja, and in which Mr. Obi was considered a front-runner in a contest that also includes Atiku Abubakar, Nyesom Wike, Dele Momodu, Bukola Saraki, and other bigwigs.
Obi was, until his resignation, one of the 15 aspirants vying for the presidential ticket of the PDP.
His letter of resignation from the party was submitted to the National Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, on Wednesday, May 25.
