Ebonyi Market fire: Fire destroys popular market in Ebonyi

On Tuesday night, a section of the popular Eke Market in Afikpo Town, Ebonyi State, was destroyed by fire. Although no one was killed in the Ebonyi Market fire, it destroyed shops and goods worth millions of naira.

Traders in the market tried desperately to save their goods, but they were unsuccessful. The cause of the fire was still unknown.

The Ebonyi State Fire Service in Afikpo was unable to mobilize to fight the fire due to a lack of equipment, according to Newsonline Nigeria.

The youths in the neighborhood came to the rescue and stopped the Ebonyi Market fire from spreading.

The Chairman of Afikpo North LGA, Oby Oko-Enyim, visited the scene of the incident on Wednesday.

While sympathising with the victims of the Ebonyi Market fire, she said, “So far there is life, there is hope. Don’t lose hope or give up because of this. You shall all overcome this setback.”

The council boss was taken round the rubble by the Chairman of the Afikpo Market Traders Association, Mr Johnson Inya Oka, who sought the support of the state government for the victims of the Ebonyi Market fire.

Ms Enyim was taken round the scene of the fire disaster by the Chairman of Afikpo Market Traders Association, Johnson Oka.

According to Mr Oka, many of the traders lost “everything” in the flames. He urged government agencies in charge of disaster management to assist the victims.

According to a council statement, Ms Enyim promised to investigate the cause of the fire.

She advised the merchants to always turn off their electrical appliances before leaving their establishments.

Lilian Eziulo, the member representing Afikpo North East Constituency in the Ebonyi House of Assembly, has expressed sympathy to the victims of the fire.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the lawmaker praised the youths who assisted in putting out the fire.

“With a sincere heart, I pray you shall recover all you have lost,” she said.
