The legendary Yoruba Monarch, Alaafin of Oyo is dead. He joined his ancestors at the age of 83, after almost 52 years on the throne – and as the longest-reigning Alaafin of all time.

According to reports citing palace sources, his remains were taken to Oyo town in the early hours of Saturday, and customary ceremonies have begun.

According to the source, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, would make an official declaration after getting word of the monarch’s death from the leader of the ‘Oyo Mesi,’ Bashorun Yusuf Akinade, who will now oversee Oyo town until a new Alaafin is installed.

On November 18, 1970, following the death of Oba Gbadegesin Ladigbolu I. He was born Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi on October 15, 1938, in the Alowolodu Royal House.

When did Alaafin of Oyo die?

According to reports, Alaafin Adeyemi passed away in the late hours of Friday 22nd April 2022, at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti.

Medical Case

A source close to AMSH said Adeyemi arrived at the hospital on Sunday, April 17, but didn’t recover from the illness he was suffering from despite the efforts of the highly skilled specialists at the high profile hospital who had worked round the clock to save him. Another source close to the hospital simply described the late Alaafin’s illness as a medical case.
