Mubarak Bala, a Nigerian atheist, sentenced to 24 years in jail by Kano court blasphemy

According to a Daily Trust report, a Kano State High Court in Audu Bako sentenced an atheist, Mubarak Bala, to 24 years in prison for blasphemy.

Bala, who is also the President of the Nigerian Humanist Association, admitted to blasphemy against Allah (SWT) and Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

He made headlines in 2020 when he was detained for blasphemy and inciting at his Kaduna home.

Bala admitted to blasphemy and stated that his Facebook statements were not intended to incite violence and that he would take precautions in the future.

The court reminded him of his right to religion, but cautioned that where his right ended, others’ began, and that while many people shared Bala’s beliefs, they did not disrespect other people’s faith.

He was charged with 18 counts and was sentenced to 24 years in jail by Justice Faruk Lawan.
